"The Core skills training has deepened my understanding of all of the steps in EFT and helped me feel a more solid foundation. The steps are explained clearly and the role plays are very effective in getting us to experience what our clients feel, and practice being there for them. I also liked the way the two day sessions were spaced out by several weeks. That gave us time to integrate the information and try on using it."  Carolyn McIntyre, LCSW

Hold Me Tight Couples Workshop in brooklyn

EFT, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples helps partners to understand each other better. Feelings are often unexpressed or misunderstood. Our primary relationship is either a source of distress and pain or a source of comfort and joy. At our Hold Me Tight workshop, I will help you learn how to deal with your feelings together, reach towards each other instead of pulling apart or fighting, and be more loving and responsive.  In our workshop we create a supportive, validating, compassionate, and fun time together.  You will leave with new tools to help give you confidence in your future together.

    Feedback from 2018 Workshop

“We had a positive experience, good step to protective focused time to grow and reflect.”

“We were stuck in a cycle that we could not get out of. While we still have work to do, I feel that we are leaving here understanding each other far better and feeling like we are on the same team. Thank you for helping us to really ‘hear’ one another for the first time in a long time.” Cheryl

“We came into this workshop with one partner uncomfortable participating but, through their courage and the safe welcoming environment fostered by the facilitators, we had some lovely conversations about both our challenges and our strengths as a couple.” H.A.

“This workshop was a valuable tool I can refer to in my relationship. It was small group, personable, and the facilitators/facilitator did an excellent job of presenting the information and guiding me and my significant other through the process and helping us work on things.”DJA

“The workshop taught me how to connect with my partner in a deeper fuller way and sidestep the unproductive arguments that would get in the way of heartfelt connection.” Tom D.

“The workshop helped me and my husband of 30+ years see how we get caught in negative cycles and begin to learn to see each other in a new light and look under the surface emotions to the deeper hurts and fears. The safe space and support provided allowed us to be more open and vulnerable with each other and to begin to repair old hurts and create new patterns of interaction and bonding. I also learned the importance of slowing down the interactions with my partner so that we can both really feel our feelings and process them.” M.G.

    Workshop Description

From the perspective of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), healthy sexuality in a long-term relationship is built on the foundation of attachment security. Yet therapists cannot assume that helping a couple create a more secure bond will automatically lead to a better sexual relationship. Sexual issues often remain unresolved unless they are directly addressed, and most couples therapists lack specialized skills in sex assessment and intervention.

Therapists must be able to move between the relational and sexual systems to help the couple be aware of how they can negatively impact each other, which then creates emotional and sexual distance.

This clinically focused workshop will show you how to do a thorough assessment of the negative relational and sexual cycle so you can skillfully use EFT interventions to help a couple move toward deeper connection. Clear video case examples will demonstrate how to integrate psycho-educational and behavioral sex therapy interventions while at the same time continue building a more secure bond through increased vulnerability. The lecture will include the latest research on sexuality, age-related changes, and diversity.

    Course Objectives:

    • Define different, new models of sexual response
    • Identify negative cycles around sexual issues during de-escalation
    • Describe Strategies of integrating sex therapy into EFT for couples
    • Apply techniques of sexual assessment in EFT treatment in couples therapy
    • Explain how to effectively create more emotionally secure bonding in couples specifically relating to greater sexual fulfillment

    When: Friday, February 15, 2019 1:00PM-3:00PM

Where: National Opera Center, 330 7th Ave, 7th Fl, New York

Many couples come to therapy with many past childhood traumas that can often lead to development of disorganized attachment strategies. One of the tasks and goals of EFT is helping each partner get in touch with their vulnerable emotions in order to be able to be intimate with each other and connect to each other in the present. When partners have past trauma history, this task is particularly difficult. EFT is an empirically validated method that has a clear map for healing trauma to prevent it from continuing to play out in the couple’s relationship.

In this workshop Judith Kellner will present a challenging case where one partner struggled with chronic childhood trauma and disorganized attachment and needed complimentary DBT treatment. She will demonstrate Stage 2 example of how to access and stay with the fear of touching sadness or the shame of “losing control” and feeling emotions fully which leads to an empathic response from the partner. In addition, a video segment from Stage 3 will be shown.

I work with couples and individuals in Manhattan and Highland Park, New Jersey. With couples, the focus is to identify unproductive relationship patterns, understand and then change those patterns, toward building, deepening and maintaining a strong, close bond. Additionally, I have over 25 years experience working with individuals who want to address relationship concerns, major life transitions, as well as those struggling with anxiety, depression, eating issues and/or a history of trauma and/or abuse.
