Hold Me Tight Couples Workshop in brooklyn

EFT, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples helps partners to understand each other better. Feelings are often unexpressed or misunderstood. Our primary relationship is either a source of distress and pain or a source of comfort and joy. At our Hold Me Tight workshop, Ethan and I will help you learn how to deal with your feelings together, reach towards each other instead of pulling apart or fighting, and be more loving and responsive.  In our workshop we create a supportive, validating, compassionate, and fun time together.  You will leave with new tools to help give you confidence in your future together.

    south african couple

We’ll watch a session with a couple who immigrated from South Africa.  The husband came for a research job and his wife is struggling to find community without her family.  Their negative cycle has led her to become more lonely and depressed, not feeling heard by her husband.  Dr Susan Johnson helps both partners see their part of the cycle which leads to more compassion and understanding.  This is beautiful stage one EFT and a good learning session since the cycle is clear and both partners can touch primary emotion without getting escalated.

Shaping Secure Connection Part 1 - Stage 1 with Sue Johnson

Stage 1 of EFT helps partners come together and contain the negative dance that constantly triggers their attachment vulnerabilities and leaves them in emotional starvation. They then have a secure base to stand and learn to engage at a deeper level in Stage II, where they reach for each other and shape their relationship into a secure bond - a safe haven that supports and nourished both of them.

In these videos, you will learn:

    • How to constantly create safety across stages in EFT
    • How the EFT therapist conducts a Stage I and Stage II (Pursuer Softening) session and uses EFT interventions
    • How to pinpoint and work to neutralize negative cycles in distressed couples

    sex as a safe adventure:

connecting sexually and emotionally through eft

Many couples presenting for couples therapy may complain of sex issues: discrepancies in desire, lack of attraction or sexual compatibility, arousal or orgasm problems, or challenges in the bedroom after having children, going through infidelity or in the wake of trauma. From the perspective of Emotionally Focused Therapy, such complaints are most often part of an underlying lack of security and bond in the relationship caused by the negative cycle between partners. At times, as the partners de-escalate and become more secure, sexual issues remain unresolved. Yet, many EFT therapists lack knowledge and skills in the area of sex assessment and intervention. In this workshop introduction to up to date research on sexuality relevant to EFT work with couples will be presented. You will learn how to do a thorough assessment of the negative relational and sexual cycle so you can skillfully use EFT interventions to help couple move toward de-escalation. This workshop will also address how to integrate psycho-education and simple behavioral sex therapy interventions as couple begins to move into Stage 2, while at the same time to continue building secure bond through increased vulnerability. This workshop will include lecture, video examples, and experiential exercises.

The steps are explained clearly and the role plays are very effective in getting us to experience what our clients feel, and practice being there for them. I also liked the way the two day sessions were spaced out by several weeks. That gave us time to integrate the information and try on using it."  Carolyn McIntyre, LCSW

Get the experience and supervision from 2 different trainers and several supervisors!

This unique Core Skills training consists of eight one-day trainings (6 hours each) that will focus on the core skills of each of the EFT steps/stages. The trainings will offer instruction, live case consultations, group supervision and experiential exercises as set forth by the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT). Participants are required to have completed an EFT externship. Core Skills training can be applied towards certification. Final decision regarding readiness for certification is determined by the ICEEFT (www.iceeft.com). EFT Externships and Advanced Core Skills trainings are designed for mental health professionals and trainees. Participants are required to note their professional affiliation on registration.

"The Core skills training has deepened my understanding of all of the steps in EFT and helped me feel a more solid foundation. The steps are explained clearly and the role plays are very effective in getting us to experience what our clients feel, and practice being there for them. I also liked the way the two day sessions were spaced out by several weeks. That gave us time to integrate the information and try on using it."  Carolyn McIntyre, LCSW
