Emotionally Focused Couple therapy is an empirically validated approach to couples therapy.  Based in attachment theory, EFT helps couples understand the distress in their marriage and experience new ways of emotionally bonding with each other to bring about healing in their relationship.  The underpinnings of EFT are centered on attunement, present process, primary emotions and positions in the relational dance.  This workshop will demonstrate how to effectively use emotions in each stage of EFT.

While EFT therapist focuses on and uses powerful attachment emotions throughout treatment, it is important to know the goals and differences in working with emotions in each stage of EFT.  In this workshop, an experienced EFT Trainer, Debi Scimeca-Diaz, LMFT, will first teach interventions used to work with escalated couples early in treatment to help them move out of secondary emotions into primary emotions.  She will then demonstrate skills used to deepen primary emotion and use enactments in a more nuanced way depending on the stage of therapy process.  The workshop will also explore potential client and therapist’s blocks to engaging with powerful attachment emotions.

Through review of video and experiential exercises, you will have the opportunity to be pulled into couple’s emotional experiences as they struggle to find their way back to each other.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1) Identify interventions used to help moved clients out of secondary emotions and into primary emotions

2) Demonstrate how to deepen primary emotion in Stage 1 and Stage 2 of EFT

3) Describe the difference between Stage 1 enactments and stage 2 enactments

4) Apply their knowledge of EFT interventions (empathic reflection, validation, reframing, empathic conjecture, and heightening)

5) Utilize affect in sessions
